Our Story:

Commune Music was founded in 2023, but its roots trace back to 2019 when founder Brett Surmons began his journey as an artist manager while earning a degree in Music Industry Studies. Managing a talented local band, he gained hands-on experience in merchandising, touring, and releasing music. He later expanded his work to Nashville, assisting artists and managers on a national arena tour, scouting talent, and building industry connections.

When the pandemic disrupted his plans to relocate—and reshaped the music industry—he rethought the traditional career path for artists and managers. He rejected the notion that success required leaving home to compete in an oversaturated market. Instead, he envisioned a new model: one where artists and professionals could build thriving careers within their own communities. This vision led to the creation of Commune Music, a company dedicated to empowering artists and fostering professionalism at every level, no matter where they are.

Shortly after, longtime friend and collaborator Ben Burrows joined the team, bringing his perspective and experience as a working artist. Together, they are building a future where artists and industry professionals can succeed—right in their own backyards.
